Violin Lessons and Music Theory

·Bev has a busy music studio on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, where she teaches violin, beginner recorder and music theory, both in person and online.

Bev is a Suzuki trained violin teacher and an experienced class music teacher. Her career’s main focus has been classical violin and Suzuki pedagogy. She has also enjoyed exploring Canadian and Celtic fiddle styles with Gordon Stobbe, Kelly Trottier, Eilidh Buchanan and others. Bev has taught violin and fiddle at the Nova Scotia Suzuki Summer Institute, Buchanans House of Music, and the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, as well as classroom music at the South Shore Waldorf School, where she started a violin program for children in Grades 4 to 6.

French Instruction

Bev offers both online and in-person French instruction. She has tutored French privately for many years, helping students achieve entrance into French schools, pass the DELF French language exam, and improve their conversational skills for fun. She has also taught French at the South Shore Waldorf School, and has worked as a French language pre-school and music teacher at École de la Rive Sud, now the Centre Scolaire de la Rive Sud. She has an M.A. in French from Dalhousie University and studied in Angers, France, for part of her undergraduate degree.

English Language and Literacy

Bev offers both online and in-person English language tutoring to both native and non-native speakers. She is TEFL certified to teach English as a foreign language. She has extensive experience teaching reading and writing to native speakers, having taught English as a core subject to Waldorf School students, Grades 1 to 6, and worked with special needs children in school and daycare settings. Her experience as a writer and editor has qualified her to provide language and literacy help to high school students and adults. She particularly enjoys working one-on-one with students, tailoring her lesson plans to suit individual needs.

Writing/Editing

Bev offers copy editing and creative writing help, and enjoys helping writers of any level achieve clarity of expression. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in The Fiddlehead, The New Quarterly, Grain, Event, The Antigonish Review, Existere, and the anthology Best Canadian Stories 2017. She received a Creation Grant in 2018 from Arts Nova Scotia and was accepted, in 2020, as an apprentice writer in the Writers’ Federation of Nova' Scotia’s Alistair MacLeod Mentorship Program. She is currently working on her first novel, Undertow.

Musician

Bev is a member of the band Trillium, who perform a mixture of original music, celtic, folk and classical. She has played with the Saeed Foroughi Trio at The Halifax Jazz Fest, with The Amours at the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, and as part of the duo Café Eclectic at the Lunenburg Festival de l’Acadie. She has also played backup violin for various singer songwriters on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
